The actual hardware of the server varies only by the speed of the processor, capacity of the memory (RAM), and the storage capacity of the hard drive(s).The real differences in servers are in the software. Operating software is usually either Windows or Linux. Depending on what you plan on using the server for will determine the programming software that is installed on the server. For instance, programmers may prefer to use Cold Fusion, PHP, Java, MS ASP, or MS .NET. If you were to have an e-commerce store, then your website would also needs a database to store the supplier, product, and customer information. If you were to have a website that provided music and/or video streaming, then a totally different software such as ShoutCast, as an example, would be required.
