*ATM - A very high-speed, connection-oriented, fixed-length 48-byte (plus 5 bytes of overhead) cell-switching scheme that is suitable for data as well as digitized voice and video. "Asynchronous" because each cell can be independently addressed to allocate bandwidth between many virtual channels as needed. Data are formatted as fixed-length cells so that it is easier to handle them in hardware (which can juggle cells faster than software). Also fixed-length cells enable networks to have predictable response times (since you know when the current cell will finish because you know its length). This isochronous capability is required to handle multimedia traffic (such as digitized voice and video).

**SONet - A synchronous data framing and transmission scheme for (usually single-mode) fiber-optic cable. Based on multiples of a base rate of 51.84 Mbits/s. This base rate (called OC-1) can carry 672 DS-0s, or 28 T1s, or 21 E1s, or 7 T2s, or 7 digitized television channels (typical for submarine fiber-optic cables), or 1 T3, or combinations of these. It has additional capacity for an order-wire (a digitized-voice intercom for technicians to use), error detection, and framing and bit-rate matching

***OC192 is currently the largest widely-standardized optical connectivity protocol. It is equivalent to 5,376 T1 connections or 9.6 Gigabits per second of transfer.
